Description
Here's a rare opportunity to acquire an impressive group of 11 Jennings Brothers antique clocks. These clocks were collected by my father during the 1950's and 60's. (NAWCC member #9872) They are about as close to mint as you can get. Not so much as a hairline in any of the porcelain dials, all with the original signed dials and signed back covers, every one with the original beveled glass without a single chip, all with original finish, and no damage or repairs that I can find to any of the cases. ( dad WAS rather fussy about his clocks). The only reference material that I know which gives any substantial coverage to JB is Ehrhardts book 2 from 1983, pp. 80-85 and almost all of these are rare and unlisted examples. I can find only 2 minor flaws in the entire group: photo 3 - clock # 1 handle is loose. photo 3 - clock # 4 missing set knob Description: ( model numbers) Photo # 2 #1- stamped model 1180 #2 Stamped on bottom Benedict & gold plate. (indicates that Jennings & Benedict mfg. had some type of reciprocal arrangement). This is an extremely rare piece. #3 no stamp #4 model 503 (this is the same as model 5433, however it has an attached plate for the capitol at Washington DC). Again, extremely rare. Photo # 3 #1 stamped model 779 #2 stamped model 699 #3 stamped Jennings Bros., 'Signifies the best' #4 stamped same as #3 #5 stamped model 967 #6 This one does not indicate Jennings. It appears to be of the same type of quality & casting, but could be a Waterbury, a Benedict, or a private label. Lennon Hall Antiques, (lennonhallantiques) who has written 14 comprehensive guides on ebay provides the following informative details regarding Jennings Brothers on ebay: The Jennings Brothers began their metalwork foundry in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1891 and remained open until the early 1950s. Jennings Brothers produced some of the most finely crafted art metal pieces that exist to this day. Their product line ranged from bookends to candlesticks to animal figurines, etc. Their methods of production required meticulous techniques which did not lend themselves to machine-directed mass production, but rather depended upon the handiwork of expert artists, sculptors and metal craftsman. Jennings Brothers metalwork is highly prized and their distinctive "JB" mark, which marked all of their products, is highly sought after by collectors world-wide. Jennings employed many new immigrants to the U.S. and their designs had an international flair. Jennings, at one point, had over 3000 pieces in their catalog. Their business peaked in the 1920 and 1930s. Many of their pieces were miniatures of well-known sculptures like the Seated Lincoln or the Lion of Lucerne. All Jennings Brothers pieces were made of cast white metal or spelter ... although they are often mistaken for bronze or even silver ... because of their high quality crafting and fine rich patination. There is no other major metalwork foundry from this era with finishes as durable as Jennings Bros and the complexity of their designs is highly prized. Feel free to e-mail any questions.
