Gitta Sherover passed away on 6.11.2004 at the age of 87 and will greatly be missed as a figure who acted much in benefit of the Israeli public. She initiated, managed and executed an enormous range of deeds bound together by an aspiration to better the general public and the individual as one.An awe inspiring picture is created by joining together the many pieces of her deeds and actions. Not only because of their scope but more importantly because their infinitely derived from a fountain of empathy and caring and a truly genuine will to better the lives of others.Gitta's love for Jerusalem and its citizens knew no boundaries, and the flowers of that love are scattered throughout the whole city.Whether by aid to those in need - giving charity in secret, and by huge achievements such as the "Gavriel Sherover Promenade" which stretches with immaculate beauty along part of the eastern border of Jerusalem on the way to the Commissioner's Palace where stands the theatre building of Jerusalem, beating constantly in the heart of the city for 35 years, or the information Centre in the memory of Gavriel Sherover in the Israel Museum.Throughout Gitta's life, dignitaries from abroad and from the country spend lengthy time in her home in Jerusalem, writing many a pages in the history book of the Israeli existence of the last forty years (some are yet to be told). As is well known, not only Jerusalem was blessed by her generosity."Beit Gavriel", on her shores of the Sea of Galilee, "Givati Brigade House for Individual Soldiers" in Metsudat Yoav, and many more donations and grants to the IDF, Israel Police, Border Patrol, hospitals, schools, Universities, are only a fraction of her life work. While still alive, she saw to it that the fund that she founded - Gavriel Sherover Fund - will carry on giving to Israeli society in those fields closest to her heart even after her passing on.The late Gitta Sherover has willed her estate in order of the Gavriel Sherover Fund, working as a non-profit operation, in order to carry on fulfilling the many works and contributing to Cultural and Social matters.Among other things, the Gavriel Sherover Fund plans to establish a social and cultural centre in memory of Sherover family on the way to the Gavriel Promenade in Abu Tourr, Jerusalem. PART OF THE ESTATE OF GITTA SHEROVER WAS SOLD PRIVATELY, PART OF IT WAS AUCTIONED IN TEL AVIV ON April 15-17, 2005 AND PART OF IT WILL BE AUCTIONED AT CHRISTIE'S TEL AVIV, SALE #1002, ON May 01, 2005, DESCRIBED AS FOLLOWS: "PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF GITTA SHEROVER, SOLD TO BENEFIT THE GABRIEL SHEROVER FOUNDATION, JERUSALEMIn 1989 the late Mrs Gitta Sherover established the Gabriel Sherover Foundation in memory of her beloved son, Gabi.It is appropriate, I think, to remember here the wonderful achievements of the Foundation. The Gabriel Sherover Promenade in East Talpiot, Jerusalem, dedicated in 1990, was the first project completed under the aegis of the Foundation. Overlooking ancient and modern Jerusalem, the promenade became a heaven for tourists and residents of the City.Mrs Sherover founded the Gabriel Sherover Information Centre for Israeli Art at the Israel Museum and embarked on a project particularly close to her heart, the building of Beit Gabriel (Gabriel's House) on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The official opening of the International Centre was co-sponsored by the Aspen Institute. What heady days those were with Mikhail Gorbachev, the architect of Glasnost, flying to Israel on her invitation to inaugurate the project and the lovely room she set aside for the eventual (and she contended 'inevitable') signing of the peace agreement between Israel and Syria. In 1994, at the request of the Prime Minister's Office, Mrs. Sherover hosted at Beit Gabriel, King Hussein of Jordan on his first official visit to Israel. The last project in which she was involved was the building of a welcoming home at Metsudat Ze'ev in the Negev desert for soldiers serving in the IDF with no family support in Israel. Other generous donations were made over the years to Israeli universities, hospitals and schools as well as to individuals in need. Now that she is gone, the Foundation remains to interpret and to realize her vision in the management of her legacy and to steer its course in the future. The proceeds of this sale are designated to the building of a cultural centre in Jerusalem in proximity to the Gabriel Sherover Promenade.Mary Gilben, Chairman, Christie's Israel"       Measurements : Marks : Height: 12.5cm. / 4.921in.Upper diameter: 24.5cm. / 9.646in.
