Description
E.N. WELCH Gale Astronomical Clock Complete & RunningOffered here from a local estate is a wonderful & very rare Gale Astronomical Clock made by E.N. Welch Manufacturing. According to the dial, Gale's Patent was Feb. 14, 1871, so I would assume this clock is from the 1870's. It was purchased from a lady who had owned the clock for nearly 20 years, and it does not appear that it has been cleaned in that time period, comes complete with cob webs inside. It would appear to be all original, no alterations noted although I am not a clock expert. The special hands are present and original, each with a small nut that holds them in place. The pendulum has a wooden stick, and the bob hangs near the lower edge of the glass, but the clock (which does run and function) keeps accurate time, so again it appears to be original to the clock. The case is in good condition, no major dings or flaws and the wood is either Rosewood or Mahogany veneer. The dimensions are 31" tall and 16-3/4" at the widest point with a depth of 3-3/4". The back of the case inside has a black felt-like material, so I have no idea if there is a label behind that or not. I have made no attempt to remove it. The dial (which measures 12" including pan) shows its age, with flaking, rubbing etc. but is still quite legible. Starting in the top left as you look at the dial, there is a name J.A. Davies and the place name on the opposite side which looks like EBBW...VALE not quite certain of the name. The dial with subsidiary dials has five different features: Time Date Day of the week Month with Sunrise & Sunset for Latitude New England Moon phase in days The eight-day movement is brass and is stamped (twice) E N Welch Mfg. Co., and the movement and springs are in good working order. There appears to be a repair to the small piece that holds the verge. Strike is on a bell for the hour and half-hour. I will be listing additional clocks over the next few days including a very nice gilt French mantle clock with Sevres Porcelain inserts, a very large French Portico clock made of alabaster and a nice English Fusee and a Lenzkirch Balcony clock.
