Description
New Page 1 High Style London Mahogany Long Case Clock made by Benjamin Ward St. George's Fields Circa 1800. The arched bonnet with applied fret, and bold crown molding above an arched door flanked by quarter columns with brass stop flutes. The eight day brass striking movement with strike/silent lever, seconds bit, date register, applied spandrels, applied chapter ring and beautifully engraved name boss. The waisted case with tombstone shaped door above a stepped molded base with applied shaped panel all resting on applied straight bracket feet. Overall dimensions 93 X 20 1/2 X 10 1/4. The clock has been recently serviced by a master clockmaker: Tom Powers of Lambertville NJ and it runs just great. The dial, works, case are all original to each other and retains the original brass shelled lead weights, pendulum, and winding crank. We purchased this clock along with an early Boston timepiece privately from a family from New England who are descendants from the original family: The Pope family of Boston. On the seat is an early repair label from by George Peterson, Jeweler & Optician, Hyde Park, Massachusetts. The feet, and fret are old, bench made restorations, and the finials are appropriate old replacements. The wood selection, color, and patina is remarkable. Good Luck. Suggest a pick up or Fine Arts Delivery Service such as Vintage Transportation for shipping. If you are a local or live in the Central NJ area, I will deliver and set up the clock at no charge. Alternately, if you are attending the Mid Eastern Regional in York, PA, the clock can be delivered to York for free, but you must pay for it at the close of the auction.
